“The Vision of Sir Launfal” by James Russell Lowell was the inspiration for the Foundation. The Holy Grail, the cup from which the Savior drank at the Last Supper was lost. Sir Launfal, the most righteous Knight in King Arthur’s Round Table, dedicates his life to finding the Grail.
As he rides out of the Castle dressed in shining armor, mounted on a white charger, he crosses the drawbridge, and a beggar, who is a leper, sits begging alms. Sir Launfal reaches into his knapsack, pulls out a gold coin and tosses it to the leper, not thinking that no one would accept even a gold coin from a leper.
Years later he returns to the Castle having failed in his search for the Holy Grail. His armor is no longer bright and his horse is now old and gray. As he approaches the Castle, again a beggar sits begging alms. This time Sir Launfal stops his horse, dismounts and reaches into his knapsack to pull out the last of his possessions, a wooden cup and a dry crust of bread. He gives the beggar the dry crust of bread and dips his cup into the stream and gives it to the beggar to drink.
Then a wonderful thing happens. The wooden cup turns into the Holy Grail and the beggar turns into the Christ who says, “Not that which we give, but what we share,-- For the gift without the giver is bare; Who bestows himself with his alms feeds three, -- Himself, his hungering neighbor, and me.”
Our Family’s love of the message in this story led to the organization of The Launfal Foundation in 2007. The Foundation is a 501-3c organization. Its purpose is to promote opportunity for Humanitarian service and education to those in need. The work began much earlier in 1989 when RoseAnn Gunther was called to serve as Stake Young Women’s President. She was inspired to teach the Young Women to busy their hands in service to those in need. Later, RoseAnn continued this work through her calling as Ward Relief Society President. The Humanitarian service continues as over 100 volunteers meet at the American Fork East Stake Center each Wednesday to assemble materials for distribution to those in need throughout the world.
